Activating/Changing E-mail Services
Students enrolling in University of Iowa credit courses are entitled to University of Iowa e-mail services; e-mail is an official method of communication at The University of Iowa.- Activating your e-mail account (two options)
- Managing your e-mail account (how to make sure you get your messages)
- E-mail support and services
You are responsible for all information sent to your UI e-mail address of record. It is your responsibility to practice good e-mail management habits to make sure you receive your e-mails.
Activating your e-mail account
If you didn't already have one, a firstname-lastname@uiowa.edu e-mail address was reserved for you when you enrolled in your UI course (this is known as your alias). You may look up your alias in The UI Directory (http://www.uiowa.edu/homepage/directories/) by looking in the "Send e-mail to" field after you do a search for your name. If you provided an already existing routing address (e.g., my-name@hotmail.com) when you enrolled, your UI e-mail alias may or may not have been set to route e-mail to that address already (you would have received e-mail notification of this).
- If you did not provide a routing address when you enrolled and thus, have not yet activated your alias, but would like to route your University of Iowa e-mail to an existing e-mail account you own, select Option A below.
- If you would prefer to open a UI e-mail account, rather than using the alias to route e-mail to another non-UI account, select Option B below.
Option A: If you already have an e-mail account (e.g., AOL, hotmail) and want to read your e-mail there, login to ISIS at http://isis.uiowa.edu/ and then follow the link in the top tool bar menu to MyUIowa>My Email>Update Email Routing Address to update your e-mail routing address.
Option B: You may request a University of Iowa e-mail account by following the directions at http://cs.its.uiowa.edu/email/openemail.shtml. This account will remain active while you are enrolled in coursework at the University of Iowa.
In either case, once you activate your alias (and in the future if you change your routing address), you will receive a confirmation from The University of Iowa: confirmation message sample
Managing your e-mail account
Once your UI alias is working, you should manage your UI e-mail by using the tools in ISIS: http://isis.uiowa.edu/
- If you opened a UI e-mail account, follow links to WebMail to check your mail on the Web, to create vacation messages, to change your routing/forwarding address, etc.
- If you are routing UI e-mail to another e-mail account, follow links to MyUIowa>My E-mail>Update Email Routing Address to update your e-mail routing address as needed.
