The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is a research symposium where students get an opportunity to hear their peers present research. In addition, students and teachers tour cutting-edge research facilities and attend faculty presentations on a variety of topics. Approximately 200 students (grades 9-12) and 30 teachers will be invited to interact with scientists and The University of Iowa faculty on present and future issues concerning our society.
In addition to the educational opportunity, the Iowa Regional JSHS also serves as a scholarship competition. The Academy of Applied Sciences will distribute $4,500 in academic scholarships:
$2,000 to 1st place
$1,500 to 2nd place
$1,000 to 3rd place
The University of Iowa also contributes $3,750 by awarding each of the top
five a $750 scholarship. In addition all five are invite to attend the National Symposium. This year it will be hosted by the Airforce in Colorado Springs, Co (April 29
- May 3, 2009) where students will take part in science tours, here keynote speakers, watch other students
present
their research. The top two finishers from each regional will be invited to compete
for national scholarships.
Any secondary student from Iowa who has or is conducting a scientific research study is eligible to apply as a presenter. There is no limit to the number of student research presenters eligible to participate from any one school. Funds are available from the Student Program Committee, Iowa Academy of Science, to defray expenses in doing research. Application forms can also be obtained from the Iowa Academy of Science, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA 50613 (319-273-2021).
Each school may bring non-competing students with the idea that that they may be inspired to compete the following year. Please fill out a school application for those students. It is required that each school send a teacher or chaperone with students.
