The grade point average displayed at the bottom of the grade report will be truncated so as not to exceed 4.00.
NOTE: The use of "+/-" grade reporting is determined by each academic department. Within departments that allow it, such grade reporting is optional by instructor and by course. Registrants may wish to query their instructor regarding the use of "+/-" grading in the course for which they have registered.
Pass/Nonpass (undergraduates only)
Undergraduate registrants may request enrollment on a pass/nonpass basis. Your instructor will assign a standard letter grade which is converted automatically in the Office of the Registrar. Grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," "B," "B-," "C+," "C," and "C-" are converted to "P"; students registered on a P/N basis who receive grades of "D+, "D," "D-," or "F" will have "N" entered on their records. The grades of "P" and "N" are not used in computing grade-point averages; credits for courses graded "N" do not count as hours earned for graduation. A maximum of two P/N courses may be taken in any one session. Students admitted to The University of Iowa are responsible for understanding the rules of their college regarding P/N registration and should consult the Student Academic Handbook to ascertain prevailing rules on P/N registration.
Courses designated as offered on a satisfactory/fail basis will be graded on this basis only. The grade of "S" is not used in computing grade-point averages. Credit with the grade of "S" may be applied toward the general education requirements or toward requirements in the major or minor. The grade of "F" is used in computing the grade-point average, but does not count as hours earned for graduation. A maximum of 16 semester hours with the grade of "S" is accepted toward the bachelor's degree.
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (admitted graduate registrants only)
The grades "S" and "U" may be used for courses taken
by an admitted graduate student outside the major department or interdepartmental
degree program, provided that the instructor of the course and the student's
departmental adviser approve the registration. No changes from letter grades
to satisfactory/unsatisfactory grades or vice versa will be allowed after
the deadline. If you are not formally admitted to a
Enrollees may register as auditors if approval is granted by the course instructor and, for admitted students, the departmental adviser. Registration for (or a change in registration to) 0 semester hours must be made. The mark of "R" (registered) will be assigned if the student's attendance and performance are satisfactory; if they are unsatisfactory, the mark of "W" (withdrawn) will be assigned. Courses completed with a mark of "R" will not meet any college requirements and will carry no credit toward graduation. Auditing may not be used as a second-grade-only option. Requests for audit registration must be made by the appropriate academic deadline.
You will pay fees for auditing a course according to the number of semester hours for which the course is offered.
A grade of "I" may be reported only if the unfinished part of the student's work is small, the work is unfinished for reasons acceptable to the instructor, and the student's standing in the course is satisfactory. Courses may not be repeated to remove incompletes. Incomplete grades must be removed by completing the unfinished part of the work. The work must be completed and submitted by no later than the stated deadline during the next session of registration, except that students with an incomplete from the summer semester are exempt from completing the course during the succeeding fall session. Failure to remove the "I" by the established deadline will result in an "F" being assigned. Instructors assigning an "I" may require the registrant to submit incomplete work prior to the stated deadline.
The "No Report" ("O") designation appearing on a student's permanent record must be changed to a valid grade according to the same rules that apply to "Incompletes." Failure to remove the "O" by the specified date will result in an "F" being assigned for each such record the next time the student registers at The University of Iowa.
