Your ICN Classroom/Location

Your classroom should be open to you and your fellow students by the time your class period is scheduled to start. Because ICN rooms are heavily scheduled, the classroom may be in use right up until the time your class is scheduled to begin, and it is possible that it will be scheduled for another class or activity after your class period has ended. Please be respectful of other users of ICN facilities.

Institutions hosting ICN sites may post particular rules regarding use of a room-e.g., no food or beverages may be allowed. Building staff may also make you aware of particular rules regarding use of a room and/or of the facility in which the classroom is housed. Please follow any posted rules, as well as any policies regarding the use of the facility that may be brought to your attention.

If you experience any difficulties regarding room use, please telephone the Center for Credit Programs staff at 1-800-272-6430 (toll free). You may leave a message if you call at a time when our office is closed.

The specific location of your assigned ICN classroom is listed elsewhere in this packet, or has been provided to you in a previous mailing.

ICN Classroom Equipment

You will find it easy to use the basic equipment found in an ICN classroom. When you wish or need to speak with your instructor, or to communicate with students at other locations, press the bar or button on your student microphone. You must keep the mike's bar or button pressed down while you are talking. When you have finished speaking, lift up on the bar or button. You will find that you can speak in a natural voice and be heard quite well at all locations. It is always helpful to identify yourself and your location when you make a comment or pose a question. Please be aware that if another student at any site is using a microphone, you will not be able to interrupt that student by using your microphone. Don't press the microphone bar or button unless you intend to speak.

Although you may not easily observe that this occurs, your instructor-and students at other locations-can view you and your classmates in your ICN classroom. Please follow the same courtesies that would apply if you were attending class face-to-face with your instructor and fellow students. This includes appropriate attentiveness to class activities. You will view your instructor's room and other video images transmitted to your site on a large television monitor at the front of your classroom. The instructor will conduct class and direct activities from his or her podium.

Depending on the class and the wishes of the instructor, you may need to use other equipment in the room. A fax machine and a telephone are provided in most (although not all) ICN classrooms. The fax and telephone utilize a dedicated network that allows the caller to telephone or fax other ICN classrooms or the ICN operations room at Iowa Public Television. The fax/telephone's 3-digit number may be found on the telephone. It is not possible to use the phone or fax to communicate with locations outside the ICN network. All classrooms also include at the instructor's podium a touchscreen computer monitor that is used to activate the cameras in your classroom. At the instructor's podium, there may also be located a PC or Macintosh Power PC, a VCR, and an electronic slide projector.

Except for the student microphones, any use of equipment in your ICN room should be undertaken at the direction of your instructor, his or her assistants, or local technical or ICN staff.

Accessing Information About Your Classroom

The state administration of the ICN maintains a web site with useful information about the ICN and ICN classrooms. The URL is http://www.icn.state.ia.us/ At this site's home page you may click on 'ICN Classrooms.' A map of the state of Iowa will appear. Click on the region where you are attending your class, and an alphabetical listing of classroom sites in the region will be displayed. If you click on the listing for the classroom you are attending, you will find displayed the "primary site contact" for the classroom's use (usually this contact has an office in the classroom's building). This is a person whose name and telephone number you may wish to note in the event that you experience difficulties with building or classroom access.

Severe Weather

It is sometimes necessary to cancel off-campus classes on account of severe weather. If your classroom location is closed, your off-campus class there will also be cancelled.

Whenever possible, the decision to cancel will be made before 2:30 p.m., but it is not possible to call every student in advance. Information regarding the status of your class will be available from the UI Center for Credit Programs office (1-800-272-6430, toll-free).

You may also want to listen to area radio stations or television newscasts regarding the closing of your class site owing to adverse weather.
