Fees
- In the event your course(s) require course-specific materials or resources, fees will be assessed, in addition to tuition, to cover these costs.
- The cost of textbooks is in addition to course tuition and fees. Some required course materials are available only through our office and are provided upon enrollment.
- All Guided Independent Study (GIS) courses are delivered online with an option to purchase print materials in addition or instead. Students requesting the print option are charged a $75 fee to cover production costs for printed study guides, readings, and media (such as CD-Rom or DVD) and shipping. A replacement study guide costs $25.
- A late registration fee is assessed if you enroll in your first course for the session after that course has begun. Late registration fees are assessed on the following schedule:
$30 for Day 1 to Day 5
$60 for Day 6 to Day 10
$100 after Day 10
Billing
The University of Iowa no longer mails paper copies of University bills (U-bills) to students. Instead, students receive e-mail notification when U-bills are available for review and payment online through ISIS. E-mail notification is sent to your University e-mail address (your-name@uiowa.edu). You are responsible for reviewing your U-bill and making sure it is paid.
- See the University Billing Office Web site for additional information on billing dates and deferred payment plans.
- If you do not pay your University bill on the due date noted on the bill, your registration is restricted. You are not permitted to register again, no grades or transcripts are released and no charges may be made to your student account until all indebtedness is paid.
- A reinstatement fee of $25 is charged per restriction.
- You are not automatically withdrawn when your enrollment is restricted for nonpayment.
Tuition Responsibility When You Drop or Withdraw
DROP means to terminate enrollment in one or more courses but to remain enrolled in at least one other course
WITHDRAW means to terminate enrollment in every course (even if enrolled in only one course)
When you drop a course
- If you drop one or more courses before or on the last day for tuition and fee adjustment (i.e. the last day to drop individual courses to reduce tuition and fee assessments), but remain registered for at least one other course, you will not be responsible for paying tuition for the course you dropped.
- However, if you drop after the last day to reduce tuition and fee assessment, you will be responsible for paying the full tuition for the course you dropped, and a $12 change-of-registration fee will be charged. (See Academic Deadlines or Course Deadline Lookup for specific dates.)
- Note: Advisor's and/or instructor's approval may be needed to drop a course after it has begun. See Student Handbook: Registration Information on ISIS for futher instructions.

- Not attending class or not submitting course work does not constitute course withdrawal.
- To withdraw your enrollment and avoid academic penalty, you must formally notify The Division of Continuing Education in writing (by mail, fax, or e-mail) before the appropriate deadline. You will still be responsible for paying tuition and fees for the course(s) in which you were enrolled according to the effective date of your withdrawal (see charts above).
- Your withdrawal is effective on the date we receive your notice. Refer to Distance Education Significant Dates and Deadlines to be certain you meet the academic deadline for the change you are requesting.
Retroactive Registration
Retroactive registration (registration for course work in a given term after that term has ended) is not allowed. However, in the rare instance that academic approval is given in response to a student's appeal for retroactive registration, the University requires that all fees for that registration be paid in advance or at the time of registration processing.
