General Policies

For details about the exams in your course—including the exam schedule and associated deadlines—see your course site in ICON: http://icon.uiowa.edu/ .

  • Your course syllabus may provide additional details regarding exam requirements if there are any for your course  (e.g., use of calculator or notes, etc.).
  • Often an Examination Information widget is provided on the course homepage.
Examination Integrity

It is the responsibility of each registered student to accept personal responsibility for upholding the integrity of the online testing environment. Strict adherence to the terms of each examination is expected and students who are aware of violations are expected to report them to the instructor. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • The use of resources -- such as books, notes, calculators, electronic information, or discussion with other individuals -- are not allowed unless specifically indicated in the examination instructions. Unauthorized use of notes, texts, or aids of any kind during a test or quiz is academic fraud.
  • Copying the work of others and/or allowing others to view your answers or copy your work is academic fraud.
  • Working on an exam outside of the established time limits is academic fraud.
  • Allowing other parties to assist in the completion of your exam, unless specifically allowed in the exam instructions is academic fraud.
Examination Registration

If a course includes a combination of face-to-face proctored testing for local students and online testing for out-of-town students, you may be required to submit an exam registration form to be granted access to the online exam.

Make-up Exams

Arrangements for a make-up exam may be allowed if you fail to register for an exam by the deadline or if you are unable to take an exam at the scheduled time. It is your responsibility to see if your instructor will permit a make-up exam and it is your instructor's responsibility to make the arrangements to release the exam to you.

Testing at Student Disability Services (SDS)

If you will be taking your exam at The University of Iowa Office of Student Disability Services, be sure to register with SDS as soon after your course starts as possible. If alternate testing hours than those designated for the exam are needed, details should be provided in the exam accommodations identified by SDS.

Tips for Successful Testing

There are certain measures each student can take to ensure their online testing environment is optimal.

  1. Carefully read all instructions for the exam before you begin. Some instructors include all instructions at the beginning of the exam, others may include instructions in the syllabus or on other course documents.
  2. Save your answers as you go instead of waiting until you have completed the whole exam. This will protect your answers should you run into technical problems. Note: if your time runs out before you finish the exam, all unsaved answers will be lost and counted as zero.
  3. Take the exam as soon as possible if you are given a span of hours or days within which you may select your testing time; this approach allows time for you to resolve any unexpected technical problems that may emerge. Note: Your instructor may be able to reset your attempt.
  4. Take the exam during office hours when the ITS Help Desk is available if that is an option in the exam availability; this will allow you to get support if you should need it.
  5. Close all other programs and browser windows on your computer before commencing the exam. Other programs and operations running simultaneously as your exam could interfere with the validity of your test and the technical processing of your answers.
