Programs Supported by Distance EducationDegree ProgramsBachelor of Liberal Studies External Degree Program (BLS) The Bachelor of Liberal Studies program can work for you if your lifestyle or location prevents you from attending college full-time or on campus. It provides a strong foundation for graduate work or career advancement and is offered by the three Iowa Regents Universities: Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and The University of Iowa. Students with 60 semester hours of transferable coursework from an accredited school and a grade point average of at least 2.25 or an Associate of Arts degree from an Iowa community college and a 2.00 grade point average may apply for admission to the BLS program. You may fulfill BLS requirements through Guided Independent Study and/or other course offerings from The University of Iowa and other accredited institutions—there is no residence requirement. In place of a traditional major, course work is concentrated in three out of five distribution areas. You'll work with an adviser to develop a curriculum that fits your personal and professional needs. A list of GIS courses applicable to the five distribution areas appears in this catalog. A full list of BLS Distribution Area Requirements is available to assist in course planning. Bachelor of Applied Science External Degree Program (BAS) The Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) degree at The University of Iowa is designed for working AAS or AS graduates who wish to complete a bachelor’s degree without interrupting their careers. It is recommended that applicants have a minimum of three years of work experience. The external BAS degree provides alternatives to traditional majors. Because the program does not have departmental major requirements, students work with an advisor to plan their own areas of emphasis. Students may construct a focus area by implementing an interdisciplinary approach or may incorporate one of two certificate programs into their BAS studies—the Public Health Certificate (PHC), offered by the College of Public Health, or the Certificate in Entrepreneurial Studies, offered by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, Tippie College of Business. In order to apply, students must have an AAS or AS degree from any Iowa community college; a GPA of at least 2.0; completion of the minimum General Education core requirements in Rhetoric, Statistics, Social Sciences, and Business/Management. For details of the General Education requirements and for more information, visit the BAS Web site (above); the BLS Distribution Areas listed later in this catalog are applicable to the BAS degree program as well. LionHawk Articulated External Degree Program The Pennsylvania State University and The University of Iowa offer a joint external degree program, nicknamed "LionHawk" in recognition of the Nittany Lion mascot at Penn State and the Hawkeye mascot at Iowa. Students who earn a two-year external associate degree from Penn State are eligible for automatic admission to the BLS program at The University of Iowa. If you do not have an associate's degree or have fewer than 60 semester hours of college work, contact Penn State about the Extended Access Letters, Arts, and Sciences Associate degree (2LAS):
Master of Library and Information Science The School of Library and Information Science makes its master’s program available to Iowans both on campus and via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). Students at multiple ICN sites take part in fully interactive audio and video class sessions each fall and spring term. The classes are augmented by Web-based resources. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) core courses are available on the World Wide Web. Registration in courses requires admission to the MSN program. MPH core courses are offered via the World Wide Web, at ICN locations, or by a combination of both delivery systems. More information may be found at the above address; choose the link for the Master of Public Health. Public Health Summer Institute The College of Public Health Summer Institute is designed to bring together a wide range of public health professionals for a period of summer study in core disciplinary areas. Participation in the Institute provides not only the positive benefits of new learning that may be applied to work contexts, but also an opportunity to network with other public health professionals and with academic experts. Course work in the Summer Institute is available on the University of Iowa campus or, in the instance of some courses, via the World Wide Web or the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). The Institute provides a way for students to commence or continue study for a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, a Certificate in Public Health (CPH), or some Master of Science (MS) degree programs. Certificate ProgramsCertificate in Entrepreneurship Undergraduate students admitted to The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business (COB) and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) may earn a Certificate in Entrepreneurship while pursuing their undergraduate major. Courses are available to all Iowans via the World Wide Web through the Center for Credit Programs. Completion of 18 semester hours of coursework for COB students and 20 semester hours for CLAS students is required for the certificate. The following four courses are required: 06T:120, 06T:133, 06T:134, and 06T:150. At least two electives also must be completed in order to fulfill the remaining semester hours. The program was named 2004 USASBE National Model Entrepreneurship Program by the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Public Health Certificate (PHC) PHC courses are primarily directed toward individuals in public health practice who are currently in the workforce as well as to individuals not presently working in the health care system but who are considering a career in the field of public health. Courses necessary for completing the CPH are offered via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), the Internet, or both, in addition to courses already offered on the UI campus and as part of the Summer Institute. Nine of the 12 hours of certificate coursework can be applied toward the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree if the student has an undergraduate degree, is registered for graduate credit for all of the certificate course work, and is admitted to the MPH program. More information may be found at the Public Health Web site (above). Choose the link for the Public Health Certificate. Courses Offered through Distance Education (besides GIS)Session-based DE CoursesMany of the courses available through Distance Education are offered on a rotating basis during the regular spring, summer, and fall terms. Most are delivered via the World Wide Web; none of the listed courses requires attendance on campus. For a current listing of course offerings, please consult the information provided on our Web site and later on in this catalog. Students interested in registering should verify course status and availability by checking the Center for Credit Programs (CCP) Web site at the above address or by phoning the CCP at 800.272.6430. Most courses require prior completion of college-level course work and/or specific prerequisites. Courses also may require that registrants be formally admitted to The University of Iowa or that registrants be applicants for admission. Such requirements are noted with each course listing. Interested persons should phone the CCP or check the appropriate program Web site for more information regarding prerequisites or specific admission requirements.
Other Course FormatsTelecourses are an educational video series, developed for college-level audiences and broadcast statewide by Iowa Public Television (IPTV). They do not require classroom attendance on campus, may be completed on a semi-structured, term-based independent study basis, and are offered each fall, spring, and summer term. (Students from adjacent states within range of an IPTV signal may also enroll.) If you reside in or near Iowa City, consider continuing your education by attending courses offered as Saturday & Evening Classes. Offered each semester on The University of Iowa campus, classes are scheduled at times convenient for part-time and working students, mostly in the evenings with some Saturday classes available. Most courses are offered at the undergraduate level. More than 200 classes are offered every term. If you would like more information on Saturday & Evening courses, please visit our Web site (above).
