How can I view a listing of Saturday & Evening
Classes?
Although we no longer print a schedule of courses, you can access an up-to-date listing of S&E course offerings on the S&E Web pages or via ISIS at http://isis.uiowa.edu/isis/courses/search.page. Select the session you want on ISIS, check the box above the Search button that allows you to view only Saturday & Evening courses and workshops, then search the course list. When viewing a comprehensive listing (e.g., all accounting courses), you can identify S&E courses by their section number, which consists of three characters beginning with SC.
What is ISIS?
ISIS stands for Iowa Student Information Services. It is a Web-based student
records, registration, and portal system. You can search or browse the course
listings without logging in. Registered students can log in to ISIS to set
up their UI e-mail account, check their eligibility to register for future
sessions, change their residing address, view their University bill or their
grades, order an official transcript, and more.
When does registration for S&E Classes begin?
Currently enrolled students may register for S&E Classes at or after their
assigned registration time during the scheduled Early Registration period,
which usually begins in mid-April for summer and fall semester classes and
mid-November for spring semester classes. Nondegree (extension) students may
register for S&E Classes beginning the first day of the scheduled Early
Registration period. However, students are able to register and make schedule
adjustments until the day before classes begin.
How do I register for S&E Classes?
Students who are admitted to the University can register for S&E Classes
on ISIS at the same time they register for daytime classes.
Nondegree (extension) students who are currently enrolled can register on ISIS beginning the first day of scheduled Early Registration for subsequent semesters.
If you are an extension student who is not currently registered, or if you want to change to nondegree (extension) status, contact our office and we will set you up to register yourself on ISIS.
What if I am not currently a student at The University
of Iowa?
If you intend to pursue a degree from the University, you should apply for
admission. Application forms are available at http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/apply.html.
For information about admission requirements, application deadlines, etc. please
phone the Office of Admissions at 1-800-553-IOWA, access the Website at http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/,
or e-mail admissions@uiowa.edu.
But if you want to take a course or two for personal interest, professional development, or to transfer to another institution, there is no need to apply for admission. Contact our office or fill out the online registration pre-authorization form and we will get you set up to register yourself on ISIS.
How much do courses cost?
Tuition and fees vary depending on the number of credit hours for which you
register, your status (undergraduate/graduate), your residency classification
(Iowa resident or nonresident), and sometimes the degree program to which you
are admitted. For academic year 2008-09 (through spring semester 2009), tuition
and mandatory student fees for one 3 semester hour course are $887.50 for undergraduate
nondegree students or $1,228.25 for graduate nondegree students. For a detailed
listing of tuition and fees, access the PDF document at http://www.registrar.uiowa.edu/tuition/.
In addition to the mandatory student fees included in the tables, most courses
require textbooks that may be purchased locally. Some courses have an additional
fee for lab expenses, materials, or equipment.
How much do workshops cost?
A workshop is designated by “WK_” as the section number. For academic
year 2008-09 (through spring semester 2009) workshop tuition is $232 per semester
hour for undergraduate students or $361 per semester hour for graduate students.
Workshop tuition is the same for Iowa residents and nonresidents. Additional
course fees may be assessed. For a more detailed listing of the 2008-09 Tuition-Related
Fees and Miscellaneous Fees for Workshops, you may access the PDF document
at: http://www.registrar.uiowa.edu/tuition/.
When do I pay my tuition and fees?
A bill will be mailed to your residing address about August 1 for fall semester,
January 1 for spring semester, and June 1 for Summer Session. Payment is due
by the 22nd of the month. For detailed information about billing and payment
options, see the University Billing Office Website at: http://www.uiowa.edu/ubill/.
Is financial aid available for S&E Classes?
Yes, if you qualify for financial aid you may use it for classes taken through
S&E. For more information on sources of aid, eligibility requirements,
application procedures and deadlines, contact the UI Office of Student Financial
Aid or visit the website at: http://www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/.
The Center for Credit Programs has a small scholarship fund for part-time students
who are not receiving employer reimbursement or other gift aid. Scholarships
generally cover tuition only for one course. For more information and a printable
application form, see: http://www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/ccp/stuserv./ss_scholarships.htm.
You must submit an application form each semester that you want to be considered
for a scholarship.
How many credits can I take in S&E Classes?
You cannot register for more than the maximum number of semester hours allowed
by your college without dean’s approval. In the fall and spring semesters,
undergraduate students are limited to 18 semester hours (s.h.) and graduate
students to 15 s.h. For the eight-week and six-week summer sessions combined,
the maximum semester hours allowed without approval are: undergraduate—9;
graduate—8. For the three-week summer session, the limit is 3 s.h. for
both undergraduate and graduate students.
Can I transfer credits earned through S&E
Classes to another institution?
You should check with the other institution before you enroll in S&E Classes.
The transfer of credits is at the discretion of the receiving institution.
When are final exams?
Your final exam, if there is one for your course(s), will be scheduled during
the final exam period, the week following the end of fall semester and spring
semester classes. Exams for S&E Classes are usually, but not always, scheduled
to begin at 4:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. The date and time of your final exam should
appear in the syllabus you receive at the first class meeting.
During the summer sessions there is no designated final exam period. Final
exams are scheduled either during a regular meeting time or at a time determined
by the course instructor in consultation with the students in the class.
When will my grades be available?
Grades are usually available on ISIS approximately eight to ten days after
the end of the term. You can log in to ISIS using your Hawk ID and Hawk ID
password and view or print out a grade report for any session from fall 2003
on.
Current students may also request an official transcript through ISIS. For
complete information on ordering transcripts, current transcript fees, etc.
phone 319-335-0230 or refer to http://www.registrar.uiowa.edu/transcripts/.
If I register for S&E Classes as a nondegree
(extension) student, am I eligible for student privileges?
Yes, the day after you are registered you may obtain a UI student identification
card, which is necessary for access to many University services for students.
More information about UI student ID cards is available at http://www.uiowa.edu/~idcard/.
New nondegree (extension) students are issued a Hawk ID upon authorization to register for
S&E Classes. You’ll be e-mailed notification of your Hawk ID and password
the day after you are authorized. The Hawk ID is your username for most online
services at UI, including ISIS. For more information about the Hawk ID, see http://hawkid.uiowa.edu/.
With privileges come responsibilities. Please read the information on the grade-point
average needed to maintain good standing, on academic misconduct, and on complaint
procedures for undergraduate extension students in the CCP Student Handbook
at http://www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/ccp/de/student_handbook/index.html
Graduate extension students are governed by the policies of the Graduate College.
See http://www.grad.uiowa.edu/ for
information on those policies.
Is parking available on campus?
On campus parking is very limited, though some reserved parking areas are available
to the public after 4:30 p.m. This includes commuter lots, except during special
events. Some metered parking is available at various locations on campus, and
is monitored until 11 p.m. Most City of Iowa City metered parking is free after
5 p.m.

service to students and to the general public. Schedules are available from
the Cambus office, phone 319-335-8633, or visit http://www.uiowa.edu/~cambus/.
Does the University have a policy regarding
inclement weather?
The University’s Extreme Weather Policy is detailed in the Operations
Manual. The general policy is as follows:
“Whenever possible, the University continues to function during inclement
weather. Regularly scheduled classes meet to the extent that students and faculty
are able to travel to campus and attend classes. Units of the University providing
essential services must remain open and in operation. These include University
Hospitals and Clinics, Dental Clinics, Public Safety, Residence Services, and
Facilities Services Group. Staff in these units will be expected to make every
reasonable effort to report to work. Administrative functions on the campus continue
to the extent that faculty, staff, and administrators can travel to and conduct
business on campus. Individuals should use good judgment and avoid serious risks
in traveling to campus or in attending classes.”
