This course is designed for classroom teachers and other school personnel seeking up-to-date knowledge on student assessment. The course focuses on how classroom assessments can be used by teachers and other school personnel to increase student motivation and improve student learning. Various issues related to classroom assessment will be discussed in this course. These issues include understanding the federal No Child Left Behind Act and its impact on classroom instruction, using state content standards, benchmarks, and grade level indicators to develop appropriate instructional objectives in the classroom, assessing students’ affective traits, dispositions, and readiness to learn, developing high-quality objective and performance assessments, and linking assessments with evaluation and instructional planning.
Assessment issues related to gender, race, culture, socioeconomic status, and students with disabilities will be discussed as they relate to classroom uses of district and state-level assessments. Also, students will read about and discuss concepts and approaches to grading and reporting student progress in the classroom as well as in the context of accountability systems required by state and federal law. Class sessions will involve a combination of lecture, discussion, and group activities.
On-campus students will enroll in the on-campus version of the course (07P:150:001). Off-campus students will enroll in the on-line version of the course (07P:150:EXW).
