Online courses are offered via the internet and are either instructor- or self-paced. Online courses may have a virtual classroom componenet, regular online meetings, or may not require any interaction with other students as you simply work on your own.
These semester-length online courses follow an instructor-paced schedule that may require students to participate in one or more scheduled meetings. Instructor-paced courses are offered online using ICON (Iowa Courses Online) or the instructor’s web site.
The courses that require meetings use technology such as Adobe Connect or Elluminate which allows fully interactive class meetings to take place in real time.
In ISIS, the delivery mode listed for instructor-paced courses varies depending on the course requirements. Some common examples are:
Web, virtual classroom Web, face to face Time/day of the week, WWW/plus meeting Web (no meeting requirement) Video Conference
Guided Independent Study Courses
Guided Independent Study (GIS) courses are student-paced and students enrolled in this format complete requirements using materials available through Iowa Courses Online (ICON), the University’s course management system. Although instructors provide guidelines for timely submission, students have the option of completing GIS courses in one or two semesters.
- If you plan to complete your GIS course in two semesters AND you receive financial aid, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid to make sure you are not penalized.
- If you are a senior and plan to graduate, DO NOT APPLY for graduation in the first semester of the course unless you KNOW YOU WILL COMPLETE the course in that first semester.
In ISIS, the delivery mode for GIS courses is: self-paced/web
