Programs - Lincoln-Douglas Debate - Senior Philosophers

THE KRITIK LAB

All participants in this lab must be entering their junior or senior year of high school. In recognition of the infiltration of critical arguments into LD debate Iowa now offers students a curriculum designed to meet the unique challenges proffered by this style of debate. Award winning and national champion coach Paul Bellus designed a program that will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively compete against this style of debate. Providing each student with a reader and a lecture/discussion series about the major schools of thought post-Hegel and post-Kant, this program promises to arm students with the ability to not only extend and answer critical arguments but to be able to identify the author's foundations and to use that knowledge to generate strategies to contend with their opponents. Discussions will focus on topic questions and rooting out the value conflict in order to ascribe assumptions and locate meaning to the question being debated and the answers presented in round. Teaching students how to engage assumptions and building on the answers they received will be included in the application of the theories presented. Students will become versed in numerous philosophers including Agamben, Badiou, Baudrillard, Butler, Derrida, Foucault, Habermas, Heidegger, Lacan, Zizek. This program is designed to meet the needs of the debater who is interested in learning about the kritik and how to successfully compete against it. This lab is a nice compliment to the Senior Philosopher's and is perfect for juniors interested in pursuing critical argumentation throughout their LD career. Enrollment is limited to 24 students and a number of people have expressed great interest so register quickly as space is limited.
