By Air
Nearly 100 commercial flights serve the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids including American, Delta, Northwest, United and US Air; there is no commercial airport in Iowa City. You should arrange flights to arrive and depart from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Airport Shuttle. A University owned charter coach transports students exclusively from the Cedar Rapids airport to campus and back again (25 miles one-way). The Institute does not provide transportation from any other airport. This shuttle is free to students participating in the institute.
If you arrive by air, the Student Services Director will make and confirm your personal arrangements with the University Motor Pool for transportation to and from campus. He will meet you at the airport in Cedar Rapids and assist you with your luggage or other concerns at arrival and departure. He will also assist you with UPS, personal mail or other day-to-day concerns that may arise.
By Bus
Iowa City is served by the Greyhound Bus Company. The bus depot is four blocks from the residence hall, and there is no charge for transportation to registration.
By Car
Iowa City is 250 miles west of Chicago and 110 miles east of Des Moines on Interstate 80. Iowa City is midway between St. Paul and St. Louis.
If a student drives a car to Institute, all keys to it must be surrendered upon arrival, and no plans should be made to use the vehicle until departure. Additionally, there will be a $75 parking permit fee.
By Amtrak
While Amtrak serves Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the Institute cannot offer transportation. A taxi is available for about $100 one-way (Mt. Pleasant is 60 miles south of Iowa City).
Local transportation
Free campus bus service is provided. When written permission is received from parents or guardians, students may ride in private vehicles. No student is permitted to drive a vehicle during the Institute. Likewise no student may ride in any vehicle during the Institute that is not provided by the Institute or otherwise without written permission from parent or guardian. Classes, facilities and shopping are located within walking distance of Slater Hall and are part of the University of Iowa campus.
Arrival & Registration
Plan to arrive and register between 10 am and 5 pm at Quadrangle Hall, June 23, 2008. At registration, students pay any balance and the $40 security deposit in cash or personal check (cash returned as cash, checks returned as checks on last day). You’ll receive library, meal, and I.D. cards, room key, residence hall rules and a campus map. Parents should plan to leave the registration/residence hall area by 5 pm, when students go to Hillcrest Dining for their first meal.
Planes/Buses that Arrive Late
The Student Services Director will ensure that every student arrives safely to campus. He will know when planes are late, and if a student doesn’t arrive, parents will be called. The same arrangements will be made for the bus depot.
Departure
Check-Out time is from 9 pm to midnight on the day before the departure date (this requires some time to return library books and room keys, locate airline tickets, and purchase handbooks). At 11 pm, a final list of charter departures and passengers will be posted. UPS shipments will be accepted from students who need to send packages.
Students may no check out of the residence hall until their parent, guardian, or shuttle arrives. Local students may depart after 9 pm on the last night. Other may depart at any time between 5 am and noon on the final day. Parents may arrive after 5 am. All students must vacate the dorm by noon on the final day.
Exceptions to Arrival and Departure
Early arrival or late departure for the Institute are not permitted. Staff responsibility begins at 10 am on June 23rd and end at noon on the last day. No supervision is possible outside that time frame, and no student can be accommodated who arrives early or departs late. However, reservations at local hotels are accommodated.
Local Accommodations
Early arrival or late departure arrangements made independent of the Institute are fine. Rooms are available at the Iowa House in the Memorial Union on campus at 319.335.3513. Other nearby hotels are the Heartland Inn in Coralville at 319.351.8132, or at the Sheraton in Iowa City at 319.337.4058.
Commuting is not permitted
Local students should not expect to go home during the Institute without making the arrangements described below for temporary absence. The Iowa program has scheduled activities from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., and faculty are willing to work with students as late as 11:00 p.m. in the lounges and classrooms of the residence hall. We want students to be immersed in their activity for the entire time of the program. Our experience indicates that something is lost for those who do not have the benefit of every activity.
