A Staff of Champions Training Champions

Dear friends,

The Institute is on!

The flood has not impacted the dorm or the area of campus debate utilizes for institute.  The operations of the program will be no different than other years.  We will be staying in Quadrangle Hall and eating at Hillcrest Dining.  The information you received on your final letters is accurate.

Thank you for your patience as we waited to assess the situation.  The safety and welfare of students and staff have always been our priority.  We believe we can safely hold the institute since flood waters do not threaten the debate campus or pose a threat to travel to Iowa City.  Fifteen years ago, we experienced a similar flood during the institute and we produced a quality experience for all participants.  We are confident we can provide the quality of instruction Iowa is noted for.

Again, all roads lead to Iowa City.  The roads to Cedar Rapids Airport are open so picking students up at the airport will commence as previously designed.  I-80 is open both from the West and East making travel to Iowa City possible.  And, the main bridges in town are open making travel around the city possible.

There is only one note which may be a concern: steam production is hampered a bit and may result in some cold showers for a couple of days.  If this is a concern and you refuse to attend the institute due to the risk of taking a cold shower, we will refund your money.  Please email paul-bellus@uiowa.edu if you choose to withdraw from the institute.

I look forward to seeing all of you on Monday. We're excited about the large number of students who have chosen Iowa this summer.  For those of you at the National Tournament, we wish you the best of luck and also wish everyone safe travels.

See you soon,

Paul Bellus
Director

Why is Iowa the best? First, we've brought together some of the most talented teachers and coaches of forensics in the nation. All staff members are leaders in Lincoln-Douglas, all have extensive experience, and collectively have won every national forensics award in the country. 18 former Iowa participants have appeared in the final round of the NFL National Tournament. Iowa is also home of the 2001 College National Debate Tournament Champions. Iowa is the only institute to offer instruction by both high school and collegiate national champion coaches.

Second, ours is an intensive learning environment that is fun and productive for students, but also well supervised and safe. In fact, Iowa is one of the only institutes to offer college credit.

Third, we deliver value. Iowa is not-for-profit, and one of the first major institutes to cancel "hidden" fees. Iowa is one of the few institutes that are officially sponsored by a university thus enabling students to experience all of the resources and support offered by a university.

Fourth, we offer an innovative curriculum. Iowa recognizes and teaches a diversity of styles, including traditional Lincoln-Douglas value and criterion debate, policy debate as it applies to Lincoln-Douglas, and kritiks. This enables students to learn a diverse set of argument discourses, making possible a better understanding of the diversity of practices in LD so students can better address and successfully compete against alternative styles in round. Unlike many institutes that teach a single style of debate, Iowa offers a marketplace of ideas. Iowa has a lab that is right for you!
