Main Library
The Main Library at Iowa spreads over 11 acres and provides some 7,000 seats. It is among the nation's largest research facilities with more than three million bound volumes. In addition to bound volumes, the University collection includes more than four million microforms. The law collection ranks third in the nation with more than a million volumes. Besides the Main Library, there are 11 departmental libraries. In addition, the Institute Reserve Collection is available in the residence hall. While there is no additional charge to students for library system use, students are responsible for the replacement cost of any materials that are lost or damaged. Destroying, stealing, or defacing library materials will result in expulsion from the Institute on the first offense.
Government Publications
Government Publications Department holdings exceed two million and grow daily. As a full depository, Iowa annually receives thousands of items published by the federal government. It is also a full depository for the European Common Market and the United Nations.
Students Have Full Use Privileges
Institute students are allowed to check out materials and receive services with the same consideration as any other University of Iowa student including use of microtext rooms, viewing booths and reading lounges. Unlike almost all other programs, our students are not limited in hours, privileges or access to any library services. A number of University librarians serve the Institute. For many years, the librarians have taken an active role in helping our students succeed in the library. Institute personnel assist and supervise in the libraries. Students are not left in the library to fend for themselves, Iowa is committed to teaching students how to use a major university library as preparation for competing successfully in college.
