Frequently Asked Questions

What Personal Things Are Needed?

Towels and Telephones. Pillow, blanket and sheets are furnished.

Equipment & Supplies. Students should bring or plan to buy:

  • umbrella
  • robe and shower shoes
  • alarm clock
  • paper
  • file boxes
  • legal pads
  • folders
  • dividers
  • pens
  • towels
  • water bottle
  • a notebook for keeping lecture notes
  • phone
  • and other items routinely needed or used in preparation for competition. Feel free to bring a stopwatch, tapes and recorder, towels, wash cloth, as well as any other practical equipment or supplies needed to begin work. A portable refrigerator is nice if you come by car (residence services no longer has them available). Laptop computers are recommended and encouraged but not necessary.  All students will have access to any Iowa computer cluster on campus during Institute hours from 8 am - 9:30 pm. 

    Attire. Iowa summers can be hot. While the Institute residence hall and classrooms are air-conditioned, students should bring warm weather clothing. Dress is casual (shorts, T-shirts, sneakers are appropriate; shirts and shoes must be worn at all times). An umbrella and light weight raincoat are a must. A robe and shower shoes are needed. 

    Items NOT needed. Sheets, bedding, pillow case, blanket and pillow are provided. While you may bring a computer and printer or typewriter, a computer center is located adjacent to the residence hall and is reserved for our exclusive use.

    Prohibited Items. Water guns, sling shots, fireworks, rollerblades, contraband and other potentially disruptive or dangerous devices are forbidden at Institute. If in doubt, don't.
