Programs - Lincoln-Douglas Debate

Which lab is right for you?

Debaters of all experience levels, novice to senior, will find that Iowa's curriculum advances their understanding of argument practice and theory! You will receive lots of hands-on experience without forfeiting topic specific preparation.  The lab will be led by at least two of the nation's most successful college and high school debate coaches.

The lab will meet for at least seven hours daily, starting at 9 am, with instructors for group activities including skills and strategy development, theory lectures, topic lectures, drills, research presentations, and practice debates.

Which style is right for you?

Each lab setting focuses on a specific style.  Students who choose a particular style will have a chance to attend lectures and electives outside of their chosen one.

Traditional labs will focus on a slower, more oratorical writing and speaking style. Argument development will be rooted in major philosophical and pragmatic themes related to the topic and literature.

Students in traditional labs will learn to become smarter debaters while speaking at a conversational rate and will improve their ability to develop positional argumentation.

Non-traditional labs will focus on strategic elements of casing and rebuttals that include a more rapid rate of speaking, the application of policy debate practices to LD, as well as an investigation of alternative casing and rebuttal practices. Argument development may include more esoteric philosophical schools.

Students in non-traditional labs will learn to become smarter, strategic debaters while improving their technical efficiency and argument knowledge base.

Mixed labs are offered to provide students with the opportunity to build cases and strategies that have elements of both traditional and non-traditional styles.

Students in mix labs will learn versatility in rates of speaking as well as types of argumentation and strategies.

Iowa's 3rd week option is dedicated to practice rounds offering an additional 14 critiqued debates and individual attention.  Two additional topics for the upcoming year will be covered.
