What is the Policy Debate Institute?

Policy Debate Institute is an extension of the National Summer Institute in Forensics.  It's an official program of the University, with a rich history of debate activities for more than 100 years.

PDI is back by popular demand!  Debaters completing their first year of debate will find a curriculum that advances their understanding of argument practice and theory.  PDI is an opportunity for 40 debaters to participate in an intensive learning environment that is enjoyable and productive.

Our innovative curriculum is based on the needs of debaters making the transition to varsity debate. While others target broad-based curriculum watering down instruction and others target the needs of varsity debaters at the expense of developing young debaters, Iowa's curriculum is uniquely designed to facilitate the skill and knowledge development of upcoming champions. We target the skills necessary to learn "how to". Instead of just modeling behavior or giving the materials to our students, we educate them and develop their ability to understand how to develop arguments through research, construction of files, refutation, and practice. Our curriculum focuses on the one-on-one instruction students require and the skills required to empower the debater to produce for themselves and their squad. Our curriculum has been proven to successfully advance young debaters through their transition to varsity debate.
