Writing the Monologue
Writing the Monologue Ever felt you were talking too much at the party? Here’s an opportunity to streamline and condense those stories and give them a clear beginning, middle and end. Through in-class writing exercises and in-class readings we’ll spend the weekend exploring different types of monologues. We’ll discuss examples of the autobiographical/narrative monologue, the autobiographical/character monologue, the character-driven/fictional monologue, and the reality-based docu-monologue. We’ll read some excerpts from the works of Spalding Gray, Doug Wright, Anna Deavere Smith and Jane Wagner. You don’t have to be a performer. You just have to want to write a focused monologue. As an assignment, I’ll ask you to create a short (2-10 minute) monologue which we’ll critique in class. This course is open to all writers. Biography
