Scaling Mt. Slush Pile: Reading Your Story Like a Fiction Editor We all receive them, those form rejections offering thanks and apologizing that “the bulk of submissions prevents a more personal reply.” Maybe they’re polite, at least as form letters go—and there’s no denying that simultaneous submissions are swamping editorial offices around the country—but such notes don’t help us rewrite! In this workshop, we’ll briefly review common mistakes and go over cover letters, then we’ll move into in-depth editorial readings of your stories, discussing craft issues, structure, aesthetics, and techniques for standing out amid a thousand other manuscripts. This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced short story writers. For longer stories (greater than fifteen manuscript pages), please also plan to bring a summary. Shadows, Hands, Petals: The Unbearable Lightness of Imagery We love those writers and poets who not only cast a spell over us with their words, but who also strike our fancy, exciting the imagination with a stream of choice images. The fact is, though, not all images are created equal—some things leap to mind with the greatest of ease, while much of the world we experience is intractable, leaden, resisting conjuration at all costs. If images are to be a “special effect” of good writing, it’s crucial that the fireworks not fizzle. In this workshop, we’ll pore over examples of successful images—and sequences of images—from a variety of genres to get a grip on what most powerfully sparks the imagination. Then, through exercises and free writing, we’ll draft and craft new work, hunting for those vivid details that will move the reader. This class is open to writers of all levels and all genres.
