The Workshop Method

Classes in the Iowa Summer Writing Festival are primarily based on the workshop method. A few will incorporate other methods. Although your workshop leader may include some study of published material, in most cases the main text for the workshop is your own creative work. Some workshops will be devoted to critiquing work you’ve brought from home, some to generating new work through exercises and assignments, and some will incorporate a combination of the two. Please read the descriptions carefully.

The workshop is a dynamic community that reads, and responds to, what’s brought to it. Every person is an essential part of the group and has an essential responsibility to it. Your writing will be read and discussed by everyone in your workshop, giving you the chance to receive responses from a group of careful readers. You are responsible for giving the same important feedback to others on their work. Workshop members and their class leader work together to determine the direction the class will take based on the needs of the group.
