LABOR SHORT COURSE

The Labor Center invites Iowa union members to a week of classes and workshops designed

to educate and motivate new union activists and to reinvigorate experienced union leaders.

The 2008 Labor Short Course will include sessions on :

     Building Stronger Unions

    

          *Restoring the Right to Organize: Organizing strategies, policy initiatives, and coalition building

          *Effective grievance handling

          *Union values & labor history

    

     Economic & Policy Issues

          *The Health Care Crisis

          *Common Sense Economics

          *Pension & 401K: What's the difference?

          *Immigration and workers' rights

          *Taxes and wages in Iowa

     Leadership & Communication

  

          *"Talking Union" one-on-one

          *Framing effective messages

          *Public speaking

     Legal Tools For Union Leaders

          *Introduction to Labor law (Private and Public sectors)

          *The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

          *Workers' Compensation Basics

Class sessions will be led by Labor Center instructors, experienced labor attorneys, The University of Iowa faculty,

Iowa Policy Project researchers and other invited labor leaders and activists.

When: Monday through Friday, June 9-13, 2008

Where: Sheraton Hotel, Iowa City, Iowa (210 S Dubuque Street)

Cost: $325 per person (if registered by May 9) - includes materials, instruction and an Amana dinner

HOUSING POLICY:  You will need to reserve and pay for your own housing directly with the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa City, Iowa (800-848-1335 or 319-337-4058).  A block of rooms is being held under “Labor Short Course” until May 9, 2008, at a per night rate of $85 (taxes not included in this figure).  There are a few rooms available for Sunday, June 8.  You must book a room by May 9 for guaranteed housing.
