The left half of this building used to be a one-room school house located just Northwest of Lakeside Lab. The school house was purchased for $1 with the condition that it would provide the polling place for the township. In recent years the Waitt Lab or Mahan Hall serves as the polling facility.
The right half of the building was added as the Thomas Macbride Reading Room, using a donation from Thomas Macbride’s descendents. Notice the two pillars at the door. They represent Dr. Macbride’s desire “to establish pillars of learning on the prairie.”
