OUR MISSION is to encourage a healthy, respectful and life-long relationship between students and the natural world while nurturing each student’s inborn curiosity about nature. Each camp uses outdoor explorations designed to develop intellectual, physical and emotional skills, including STEM preparedness. Feathery Friends

AGE: 4 and 5 year olds

DATES: Tuesday-Thursday, June 27-29; age 4, 5. Register for morning: 9:00-11:30am or afternoon: 1:00 - 3:30 pm.

COST: $75.00

Flit and fly, hopping and gliding! Feathers bright or good for hiding! Birds that sing, squawk and caw! Nests of grass or many a stick; beaks that crack, sip, scoop or pick! Let’s flock together and learn about the wonderful world of birds!


Little Things, Big Things

AGE: 4 and 5 year olds

DATES: Tuesday – Thursday, July 18-20. Register for morning: 9:00 - 11:30 am or afternoon: 1:00 - 3:30 pm

COST: $75.00

Bugs and other things so small - they are hard to see at all. What is in the moss? Why isn’t it tall? Then things so big and high – like the trees that touches the sky! Let’s take measure and explore nature’s treasure!


Awesome Animals

AGE: For students entering 1st and 2nd grades

DATES: Tuesday – Friday, July 11-14. Register for morning 9:00 am - 12:00 noon or afternoon 1:30 - 4:30 pm

COST: $100

The animal kingdom is filled with an endless array of amazing creatures. Join us in exploring the Lakeside campus to discover cool facts about Iowa’s native animals from coyotes and bats to dragonflies and toads. If you know a kid who loves animals, this summer camp is guaranteed fun!


Frog Camp

AGE: For students entering 3rd – 7th grades

DATES: Monday – Friday, June 19 – 24; 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

COST: $150.00

Our focus is frogs: where they live, and how they grow - but a wetland presents all kinds of critters and phenonmenon to learn and know! A marsh-mucking we will go! This camp is for beginning and advanced froggers, meaning those who have attended Frog Camp before will have opportunity to advance and deepen their knowledge about frogs and other wetland inhabitants.


Habitat Happenings

AGE: For students entering 3rd – 7th grades

DATES: Monday – Friday, July 31 – August 4; 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

COST: $150.00

Ghost lakes! Fen, jacoliths, kames and moraines! Skinks, skippers, crawdads and Johnny Darters! Join us to investigate the diverse ecosystems of the Iowa Great Lakes and their plants and animals. For those who have taken this camp before, we will have advanced sessions, plus swimming and canoeing!


Geo Trekking

AGE: For students entering 8th - 10th grades

DATES: Monday - Friday, July 24 – 28: Day camp Monday and Tuesday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm; Overnight camping trip departing 9:00 am Wednesday and returning by 3:00 pm Friday.

COST: $200.00

How do geology, biology and ecology intertwine to create the diversity found on Earth? Let’s go trekking! From glaciers and floods to volcanic eruptions we will explore how nature’s forces have shaped landforms and influenced the distribution of plant and animal communities through local daily field trips and a two-night camping trip! We will trek to Stone State Park near Sioux City to establish basecamp for forays into the unique Loess Hills and across the Missouri Alluvial Plain into Nebraska where we will visit the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park. Join us for a topographical journey of hiking, digging, swimming and hands on adventuring!


HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE PREP DIATOMS

AGE: High School Juniors or Seniors who have completed high school biology and preferably AP Biology

DATES: One and two week options: July 23 – 29 or July 30 – August 4

High school students are invited to study one of the earth’s most unusual group of organisms: diatoms. Accepted students will earn up to two college credits FREE thanks to the Friends of Lakeside Lab. The course has been expanded to offer one or two week options, with returning students welcomed to deepen their knowledge.
