Thomas Hockey, De Anna Tibben, Lee Potter, and John Groves, University of Northern Iowa

UI: 00L:010

ISU: Ia LL 110

UNI: 890:010

This course is an introduction to the essentials of earth science: astronomy, meteorology, geology, and paleontology.  It is scheduled mornings only so that students may work in the Okoboji area if they choose.  There are no prerequisites except a diploma from, or admission to, an accredited college or university.  Students wishing a noncredit option are welcome.  Meets July 7 to August 1, 2008.

One week will be devoted to each of the four disciplines.  Each of these one-week units will end with an examination.  The grade for the course will be based on these tests and laboratory work.  Laboratory work will use the environment of Lakeside Laboratory.  There will be no cumulative "final" exam.

Interdisciplinary in nature, the course will be team taught by faculty from the Department of Earth Science, University of Northern Iowa.  Each of four instructors will be responsible for one unit, appropriate to his or her field of expertise.   The faculty are Thomas Hockey, PhD, Professor of Astronomy; De Anna Tibben, MA, Adjunct Instructor of Meteorology; Lee Potter, PhD, Adjunct Instructor of Geology; and John Groves, PhD, Associate Professor of Geology.  The course will be coordinated by Dr. Hockey. Field trip fee: $10.

There are many seasonal employment opportunities in the Okoboji area.  Lakeside Lab is partnering with the local Chamber of Commerce to find work for interested students. For information or assistance, please contact Peter J. van der Linden, Executive Director of the Lab, at 712-337-3669 ext. 5 or peter-vanderlinden@uiowa.edu.
