Field study of the principles and processes of soil formation and geomorphology. Development of expertise in soil descriptions, mapping, classification and environmental interpretations. Meets July 7- August 1, 2008.
In this course we explore the Lakeside region from the perspective of soils and landscapes. The majority of time is spent in the field where we will become proficient at describing, mapping, classifying and interpreting both natural and human-impacted soils. During either the third or fourth week we will go on a three-night trip where we traverse Iowa in order to develop statewide pedological expertise. There is no required textbook. Rather Dr. Burras will provide to each student the appropriate field manuals, soil surveys and maps needed for this course as well as identify relevant web resources. Appropriate attire includes field boots, hat or cap, rain wear, and clothes suitable for working outdoors with soil. Field trip fee: $140.
