Agrestal Environmental Writing Scholarship
Funded by the Agrestal Project
The Lakeside-Agrestal Environmental Writing Scholarship offers students an intensive, one- to two-week creative writing experience in the natural setting of Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. Students have the freedom to explore or design their own writing experience as long as it addresses connections between people and the environment and the value of hands-on learning outside the classroom. For inspiration, students are directed to read “What is Environmental Imagination?” at http://engl.iastate.edu/programs/creative_writing/mfa/what-is-environmental-imagination-1.html. At the end of the experience, the student will share his/her writing and reflections on the experience with the public in an informal gathering.
The LAEWS is available to any upper level college/university or graduate student, and covers two weeks double occupancy room and board at Lakeside. It also provides a $250 stipend that students may use to upgrade their room to single occupancy if they wish. Students are encouraged but not required to combine their writing experience at Lakeside with a one week, one-credit hour course, and may apply for an additional scholarship to cover that cost. To see a list of courses, please click here. Students wishing to receive course credit for the writing component should contact their advisor to determine if it qualifies for credit at their school. To apply, please submit a concise proposal by e-mail to Lakeside's Executive Director, along with a letter of recommendation from your academic or thesis advisor. The deadline is April 1.
