Lakeside Lab's Essays of Abandon Scholarship

Communicate your passion about wildness and earn a scholarship at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory!

Offered in partnership between the
Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Agrestal Project, and the Friends of Lakeside Lab, Inc.

Iowa Lakeside Laboratory is a premier biological field station located on the shores of Lake West Okoboji in Iowa’s prairie pothole region. Each summer Lakeside offers unique, field-based courses in plant, aquatic, prairie, insect, and general ecology; taxonomy; freshwater algae; nature photography; archaeology and other subjects.  There are three summer terms, each four weeks long, as well as short courses. All courses can be taken for credit through Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, and Drake University. For 2006 course offerings see www.lakesidelab.org

To earn $780 towards a Lakeside scholarship, communicate your interest/passion/knowledge in an essay about one or more of the following topics:

  • the root causes of wild(er)ness degradation
  • our population/consumption dilemma
  • domestication and ecocatastrophe
  • living simply and sustainably
  • other aspects within the multi-faceted subject of wildness

Original, titled, previously unpublished essays of 3000 words or less typed on numbered pages should be e-mailed by extended deadline April 15, 2008 as a MS Word attachment along with contact information and a brief bio to Jane Shuttleworth, Executive Director, Friends of Lakeside Lab, lakesidejane@yahoo.com
