The Certificate in Public Health
The Certificate in Public Health is designed to strengthen the
knowledge and skills in basic public health competencies. The
program, offered by the University of Iowa College of Public Health,
is primarily directed toward individuals in public health practice
who are currently in the workforce. It is also available to individuals
who are not presently working in the health care system but who
are considering a career in public health. However, it is expected
that these individuals will have had appropriate, substantive
work experience.
The certificate requires 12 hours of stipulated course work.
All courses needed for completion of the Certificate in Public
Health will be offered via the Internet in addition to courses already offered
on the UI campus and in the College of Public Health's Summer
Institute. Students have up to five years to complete the certificate
program. The curriculum appears below.
Nine of the 12 hours of certificate coursework can be applied
towards the Master of Public Health degree. The student must be
admitted to the MPH program and have been registered for graduate
credit for all certificate course work.
Although you do not have to be formally admitted to the Certificate
program to attend Summer Institute courses, interested students
are strongly advised to apply. Applicants must have completed
at least 60 semester hours of undergraduate education and have
a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
