173:157:SCA Zoonotic Diseases 2 or 3 s.h.
This concentrated course will introduce public health students to the epidemiology and control of zoonotic diseases. Each day there will be 3 hours of lecture and 3 or more hours of field activity. The course is comprised of readings, lectures, field studies, and laboratory exercises. Zoonoses endemic to the Midwestern United States will be emphasized.

Foodborne illness from various microbial agents, food toxins and adulterants; disease investigations, risk analysis, risk mitigation and prevention. 173:099:EXW Evidence-Based Public Health Methods 3 s.h.
Provides an introduction to the science base in public health and how it is used to choose, conduct an evaluate evidence-based programs and policies.

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

    1. Define health and examine what indices are used to determine health of the public to understand the health status of populations, determinants of health and illness, factors contributing to health promotion and disease prevention, and factors that influence health services utilization.

     2. Identify relevant and appropriate variables and determine suitable data and information sources.

     3. Evaluate the integrity and comparability of data and identify the gaps in data sources.

     4. Identify and apply basic research methods used in public health:

          a. Surveillance

          b. Demography

          c. Statistical concepts and estimation

          d. Rate estimation

     5. Make relevant inferences from quantitative and qualitative data; risk estimation and assessment

     6. Recognize impact of data on ethical, political, scientific, economic, and overall public health issues

     7. Collect, summarize, and interpret information relevant to a public health issue

174:102:EXW Introduction to the US Healthcare System 3 s.h.
Familiarizes students with US health care system. Covers socioeconomic, political and environmental forces influencing the organization, financing and delivery of personal and public health services. Health services, policy concepts, terminology are emphasized. Course objectives include: 1) understanding the historical, social, economic, political and demographic forces shaping health care services and policy in the US and their relationship to the structure, financing, and delivery of health service; 2) understanding determinants of health (cultural, social, economic, political, environmental, and behavioral) and analyzing their impact on individuals, communities, and health care organizations; 3) understanding the responsibilities, roles and distribution of health care professionals and organizations; and 4) analyzing the health status of populations as it is affected by the policies, organizations, and financing of health care organizations and systems. Same as 06J:159. Enrollment limited to 45.
