University Credit
The course is available for 0 or 3 credit hours. Tuition for three credit hours at the University of Iowa costs approximately $800. Because not all students want or need these credit hours, students have the option of participating in the Secondary Student Training Program for zero credit hours.
If the zero credit option is chosen, you will not be charged this additional amount. Indicate on the application whether you would like to take this course for 0 or 3 credit hours. A common question from parents and student involves the pros and cons of the credit option. Here are the Pros and cons as I see them.
Pros: Credit from a Big ten school will likely transfer anywhere. Eventually you will need around 136 credit hours to graduate so buying three of them now will likely save you from buying 3 hours later. Every year tuition costs increase so paying for 3 hours now, could save you money down the road. You are doing the work may as well get credit for it.
Cons: Choosing the for-credit option increases the total amount you pay this summer. The price is simply a tuition charge which does not in any way change the experience of the program. Buying credit 3 hours at a time is not necessarily the most cost effective way to buy credit.

Program Costs
This year, the projected program costs will total $2350. Do not let the high price tag keep you from applying. Many students will receive some financial aid to offset these program costs.
Financial Aid
Students may apply for financial aid to cover, or partially cover, program costs. Aid is need-based not merit-based. Therefore aid cannot be determined until ALL of the students have been accepted into the program and those wanting financial aid have applied for it.
We will mail financial aid forms out with the acceptance packets and make our determinations as to who receives aid based on pool of returned financial aid forms.
Some students may wish to accept our offer dependent on the receipt of aid. We allow this conditional acceptance.
Housing
Participants live on campus in a University residence hall, sharing air-conditioned
rooms with another SSTP student. University residence hall counselors provide
supervision.
Meals
Meals are provided as part of the program costs and are served in the residence
hall.
Recreation
In addition to lab work, students will also enjoy lectures, plays, concerts,
and films as well as campus recreational facilities. In addition to what
the
campus
has to offer, the SSTP staff schedules social and recreational activities.
Examples of social and recreational activities include a canoe trip,
a camp out, pottery making, picnics, movies, ice skating, etc.
