Course Objectives
-State the differences between ionizing & nonionizing radiation. Be able to identify the medical imaging modalities using each type of radiation & apply the inverse square law to effectively reduce one’s radiation exposure
-Describe how x-rays are produced & the effect of the inverse square law
-State the concepts to accurately predict which tissues will be most susceptible to the detrimental effects of ionizing radiation, the biological effects of radiation on tissue, the appropriate safe distance & shielding methods, & the difference between stochastic & non-stochastic effects
-Understand the ALARA concept in terms of time, distance, & shielding
-Understand the maximum annual dose of occupational ionizing radiation
-State the agencies involved in regulation, requirements & policy making regarding fluoroscopy
-State the regulatory requirements for dosimeters & their proper placement
-Describe the method for obtaining a dosimeter & answer questions regarding dosimeter readings, reports & radiation safety

This course, taught by experts in the areas of forensic nursing, law enforcement, advocacy & criminal prosecution, emphasizes the overall importance of the role of the SANE/SAFE and their role in the interdisciplinary Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).

Occupational Hearing Conservationist Re-Certification Course

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
This workshop will re-certify those who already have CAOHC certification. The update includes review of hearing measurement techniques, employee education strategies, selection & fit of hearing protection, as well as current state & federal regulations relating to noise exposure & hearing conservation.

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the offering participants should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the requirements for audiometric calibration & function
2. Arrange for a good test environment for hearing evaluation
3. Manage special problems in hearing conservation & administration of programs
4. Interpret the state and federal regulations relating to noise exposure & hearing conservation
5. Discuss the assessment of hearing protector effectiveness
6. Discuss the selection & fit of appropriate hearing protection
7. Discuss the requirements for employee education & content of training
8. Develop an educational program for hearing protection
9. Discuss OSHA requirements for record keeping

CONTINUING EDUCATION AWARD
The UI College of Nursing is an Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider: No. 1. This course will award 9.6 contact hours (0.96 CEUs). Full time attendance is required for the CEU award & CAOHC certificate.

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS
Cancellations made prior to 9/20 will be refunded less a $50 handling charge. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER THE COURSE HAS CONVENED. We reserve the right to cancel the program due to lack of sufficient enrollment in which case the entire registration fee will be refunded.

Occupational Hearing Conservationist Certification Course

This workshop is designed to familiarize participants with all facets of occupational hearing conservation & certify them as audiometric technicians. Upon completion, a certificate will be awarded which documents evidence of training now required by federal law. Participants will also qualify for certificate by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation(CAOHC).

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the basic anatomy of the ear, audiometric terms, the audiometer & test environment
- Identify types & causes of hearing loss
- Administer pure tone threshold tests & identify factors that affect them
- Discuss & interpret government regulations relating to noise exposure & hearing conservation programs
- Discuss effects of noise on hearing & the effects of hearing loss on ability to communicate
- Discuss assessment of hearing protector effectiveness & the selection & fit of appropriate hearing protection
- Discuss requirements for employee education & content of training for hearing protection & conservation
- Develop an educational program for hearing conservation appropriate for the given audience

Vendors can unload from the near North parking Lot off 5th and Crocker. The unloading area is on the north side of the building at the garage door. A limited number of push carts will be available.

Parking is $7 per day in the North Lot.

Scheduled breaks include: 7-9:15am; 10:30-10:45am; 1-1:30pm; 2:30-3pm

All exhibits include 1 3x8' skirted table, 2 chairs, wastebasket and table sign.

All but $30 of your registration fee will be refunded if inability to exhibit is made known prior to October 1. This will allow time to find a replacement. No refunds will be given after October 1.
