2017 Samuel L Becker Memorial Conference

10/21/2017 - 10/21/2017
The 2017 theme for the Becker Conference is Movements and Networks. Honoring the memory of Samuel L. Becker, this conference examines interesting questions at the cutting edge of Communication Studies scholarship. The 2017 theme invites exploration of the ways that movements and networks—broadly conceived—challenge our thinking about social influence, political resistance, borders and belonging, and modes of community and citizenship. Movements and Networks considers a range of contemporary and historical cultural phenomena for its communicative import, raising new questions about what communication is and how it shapes our world.

This one-day event will feature three keynote addresses (Rachel Smith, Penn State; Lisa Flores, University of Colorado Boulder; Lori Kido Lopez, University of Wisconsin-Madison). There will be invited responses with audience Q&A, an interactive panel discussion, and an evening reception. Through conversation across disciplines, we hope to inspire rigorous conversation and interdisciplinary thought at the nexus of communication, movements, and networks. The 2017 Samuel L. Becker Memorial Conference is free; advance registration is required.

The conference will be held at the Old Capitol Museum in the Senate Chamber. Registration with coffee and pastries begins at 8:30 AM on Saturday, with plenary sessions running from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Lunch and coffee breaks will occur throughout the day.

Lunch is on your own from 12:30-2pm

The evening reception will include heavy appetizers and drink specials. The event is free to conference attendees and begins at 5 PM in downtown Iowa City.

Planning & Writing Successful Grant Proposals Seminar

10/24/2017 - 10/24/2017
Presented by M.S. (Peg) AtKisson, Ph.D.

October 24, 2017
The University of Iowa
The University Club
1360 Melrose Avenue | Iowa City, IA

The deadline to register is 12:00 pm (noon) Tuesday, October 17, 2017.

Cancellation policy: Cancellations prior to October 17 will be assessed a $40.00 processing fee.
Cancellations between October 17 and October 23 will be assessed a $75 processing fee.
No refunds will be available after October 23.

The AtKisson Training Group (ATG) day-long seminar focuses on the fundamentals of writing proposals—the why beneath the how—while also providing concrete and actionable tools that can impact both the proposal and the person. Writing a winning grant application requires more than clear organization. It requires that the applicant is ready to go, has both the right idea and the plan for executing it, and will be seen as the right person to succeed. The seminar combines lecture format and engagement activities and covers all aspects of developing a competitive grant proposal. Participants receive handout materials and many opportunities for questions and discussion.

5th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language

4/5/2018 - 4/7/2018
The Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (SSHL) is an initiative aimed to offer an intellectual forum to discuss the variable linguistic reality of Spanish heritage bilingualism in the United States (and elsewhere), and the diverse pedagogical needs of students of Spanish as a heritage language.

It serves as a venue for both researchers and educators at all levels to share, develop, and discuss theoretical and practical approaches that recognize and validate the study of Spanish as a heritage language from the perspectives of various academic disciplines.

The SSHL provides a space to bridge the gap between research findings and the praxis of heritage language teaching, as we collaborate towards the implementation of pedagogies that allow heritage learners not only to develop their language proficiency but also to reflect on their own identity formation.

The 5th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language will be held April 5th - 7th, 2018 at The University of Iowa.
