2017 Samuel L Becker Memorial Conference

10/21/2017 - 10/21/2017
The 2017 theme for the Becker Conference is Movements and Networks. Honoring the memory of Samuel L. Becker, this conference examines interesting questions at the cutting edge of Communication Studies scholarship. The 2017 theme invites exploration of the ways that movements and networks—broadly conceived—challenge our thinking about social influence, political resistance, borders and belonging, and modes of community and citizenship. Movements and Networks considers a range of contemporary and historical cultural phenomena for its communicative import, raising new questions about what communication is and how it shapes our world.

This one-day event will feature three keynote addresses (Rachel Smith, Penn State; Lisa Flores, University of Colorado Boulder; Lori Kido Lopez, University of Wisconsin-Madison). There will be invited responses with audience Q&A, an interactive panel discussion, and an evening reception. Through conversation across disciplines, we hope to inspire rigorous conversation and interdisciplinary thought at the nexus of communication, movements, and networks. The 2017 Samuel L. Becker Memorial Conference is free; advance registration is required.

The conference will be held at the Old Capitol Museum in the Senate Chamber. Registration with coffee and pastries begins at 8:30 AM on Saturday, with plenary sessions running from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Lunch and coffee breaks will occur throughout the day.

Lunch is on your own from 12:30-2pm

The evening reception will include heavy appetizers and drink specials. The event is free to conference attendees and begins at 5 PM in downtown Iowa City.
