Classes for Central Labor Councils

Labor Center educators can travel to your area to conduct a customized class that meets the needs of your Central Labor Council. (Find out more about the Central Labor Council nearest you.) In the recent past, Iowa Central Labor Councils have hosted Labor Center programs on topics such as steward education, workers’ compensation, mobilizing members, workers and the global economy, and many others. Classes can range from a short evening class in conjunction with a regularly scheduled meeting to a full-day program.

Recruit 20 participants, and the Iowa Federation of Labor will pay for your class!
Iowa Central Labor Councils are eligible to host up to four free Labor Center classes per year as part of an educational program sponsored by the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. In order to qualify, the Central Labor Council must schedule one of the programs listed below and recruit at least 20 participants to attend. The Iowa Federation of Labor will pay Labor Center program fees. The Central Labor Council is only responsible for recruiting participants, providing a meeting space, and paying the cost of participant handouts.

An Economy That Works for All
We all know it: today's economy is not working for working families. Get the facts on recent economic trends and policies, and ideas of how workers can change the face of our economy.

Organizing & the Employee Free Choice Act
The right to organize is under attack. Learn about current proposed legal reforms, and union strategies for restoring the right to organize.

Mobilizing Members
Want to build a stronger labor movement in your community? Learn techniques for building union power by crafting messages, recruiting volunteers, and turning members into activists.

Health Care
An overwhelming majority of Americans say the U.S. health care system needs fundamental change. Review facts on the health care crisis and evaluate the range of solutions being proposed.

Immigration
Immigration policy has become a key issue for unions and workers. How can the labor movement respond to this issue while promoting union values, reaching out to new workers, and building an economy that raises labor standards for all?

Union Newsletters (requires as few as 5 participants)
A local union newsletter can be the key to sustaining an informed, educated, active membership. Start or revive a newsletter for your union or improve communications in your existing newsletter.

Strategic Planning
What goals would you like your Central Labor Council to accomplish in the next 1-5 years? What changes and actions will be needed to accomplish those goals? Work with Labor Center staff to create a plan that addresses these questions, as well as a timeline and tips on organizing and creating accountability.

One program of the labor council's choice
